The debate at ECWA secondary school

The debate

Written by  Mhembe Jeremiah Orhemba
Lola was happy  that her school,Ecwa Secondary school was gifted and full of grace .Although this school was based in Nigeria, it's structures were like the other schools in the world. And today, it was organizing a debate in the school hall. At 10:05 am, Students had flooded the hall. The science students  walked proudly with their hands tucked into their  lab coats to the long  table on the right . Art students were of course distinct in their maroon cloaks sweeping the floor as they walked to theirs on the left . Today was going to be a great day for Lola. Her long anticipated opportunity had come. She was finally going to stand on that stage and look science students in their pride filled eyes and tell them that they were ordinary people like the arts. She was well prepared to tell them how foolish they were to boast of being better when they never even knew what carbon dioxide felt like. The only thing they were knew was the theoretical aspect of science. It was definetely time to shut them off.
As she walked to her seat, her debate papers lodged under her arms, she wore a sparkling smile that brightened her blue eyes. She didn't want the science students staring at her as they had been doing ever since she stepped into the hall. Fortunately for her, they took their eyes of her once they caught a glimpse of her grin and started murmuring to themselves . Perhaps they were afraid they would loose this debate as long as Lola was representing the arts. When she had found herself a seat, she closed her eyes and mumbled some words of prayers. She needed to win so as to shut the science students off.
Later,  a woman so lean and tall came up the stage and the scattered chattering of students ceased immediately  .The woman was lean but no-one played with her. She was a  strict disciplinarian who took no shit  from anybody.  Besides ,she was gifted with the ability to keep a class calm without efforts
"Good  day, ECWA Secondary School students ",the woman's high pitched voice saturated the hall.
"Good  day, Mrs. Dursley",the students chorused in response.
"I hope we know why we were invited to this hall today?", Mrs. Dursley said as she took her eye glasses of her shirt and fixed it to her eyes. She had a hazy sight.
"yes madam",the students reply was dull.
"please Lola, Ijavour and Rosemary get ready. The art students are to speak first."
And then came howls and mutterings from the arts. They wanted to speak after the Science students. As for the science students, they maintained tranquility. They were not ready to behave like barbarians.
The lean woman left the stage and another man, so fair and hairy came up. He was looking nice in his white clothes.
"Um students, we are about to  begin .debators please  be as fast as you can ." he said and breathed in.
"What is faster than light ?",he asked with the aim of saying  something.
The hall was quiet. Nobody could answer. Lola was beyond happy that science students could not answer. She raised her hand up in the air and hoped the teacher called her. And he did. She stood up and walked up to the stage, her cloak sweeping as she walked. Soon, she reached the stage.

Lola had a  bossy voice that always attracted attention.
"Simple ",she said, feeling proud that she was addressing a group of science students. This was the chance she had been waiting for ever since. The chance to answer a question no science student could.
She cleared her throat and stood stiff, not minding that science students  in the hall contorted their faces immediately they sighted her talking .Then she answered the question. "The only thing faster than light is GOD".
She wore a final smile of victory, "You call yourselves thinkers yet I see no difference between us. "
She then stepped down the stage and walked with pride back to her seat.
"Thank you, "said the teacher, Mr Friko. "As we've heard her, please let this hall be as quiet  because GOD is here. "
After the debate, Lola walked back to her hostel, with her friends by her sides.Their hostel was a tower built of stones. It had glass for windows and a glass  computerized door. As she reached for the door, a tall, lean guy with small scary eyes approached her. The lab coat he wore had already identified him as a science student.
The boy seemed nice in his innocent looks but when Lola turned around to hear him, it was totally different.
"who do you think you are? "the guy asked. "do you think art students make it in life? You even seem invisible in the society. Who needs you? "
Lola's friends started laughing at the boy. Lola just smiled at him and replied ,"fools like you don't deserve an answer ".
The boy walked away feeling embarrassed. Lola laughed as she tapped on the door, giving the  required pin to open the door. The door opened and the trio steeped in.
"I wonder who science students think they are",Lola said and her friends laughed out their sorrow. Perhaps, she  was becoming a hero for the arts.....
